$15 Million Boost for Aviation Safety in Fiji!

A grant agreement totaling around $15 million has been signed between the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Government to enhance the safety of aircraft operations. The initiative aims to bolster transport infrastructure capacity and promote sustainable growth through equipment provision and technical support from JICA.

The equipment set to be acquired includes two VHF omnidirectional radio beacons, known as Distance Measuring Equipment (VOR/DME), five airport fire engines, and three rescue boats. These upgrades will take place at major airport facilities such as Nadi International Airport, Nausori International Airport, Labasa, Savusavu, and Matei airports.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka underscored the necessity of upholding international aviation safety standards, recognizing the contributions of the Fiji Airports Ltd board of directors and staff. He stated, “Investment in Fiji Airport Ltd is crucial to ensure our facilities meet international aviation safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization.” The Prime Minister expressed gratitude for JICA’s funding, which aims to enhance aviation facilities and efficiency at primary airports, adding that the new equipment and services would greatly improve the reliability and operational efficiency of the airports as a key transportation hub in the region.

Japanese ambassador to Fiji, Rokuichiro Michii, noted that the formalization of the project aligns with Fiji’s national development plan and aims to improve aviation safety facilities at major airports across the country. Fiji Airports Ltd’s chief executive officer, Mesake Nawari, pointed out that many existing facilities are over 20 years old and require replacement. He welcomed the financial support from the Japanese government, emphasizing the critical need for water rescue facilities.
