14.4kg Meth Seizure in Fiji: A Global Drug Trail

The seizure of 14.4 kilograms of methamphetamine that traveled through Fiji from Canada to Australia underscores the difficulties in combating the illegal drug trade.

Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua commented on reports of the recent drug seizure by Australian authorities, noting that although Fiji was only a transit point in this case, it emphasizes the need to bolster the country’s border security.

Mr. Tikoduadua highlighted the extent to which criminals went to conceal the drugs, demonstrating the importance of strict border controls and international collaboration among border authorities.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) reported that a Canadian national was apprehended carrying the drugs, which were hidden in plastic packages wrapped in towels soaked in vinegar and coffee beans.

The drugs had an estimated street value of A$13.4 million (F$19 million).

AFP detective Acting Superintendent Steve Wiggins pointed out the wider impact of methamphetamine on the Australian community, noting over 10,000 methamphetamine-related hospitalizations in the 2021-2022 period.
