The Fiji Development Bank is currently conducting an environmental impact assessment (EIA) for its $10 million solar farm project located in Bureta, Lau. During a recent appearance before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Economic Affairs, acting CEO Titilia Vakaoca-Kamil shared updates regarding the project and its alignment with environmental regulations.

Mrs. Vakaoca-Kamil indicated that the bank has been collaborating with the Environment Department as part of the EIA process. She highlighted that the bank has been accredited under the Green Climate Fund since 2017, which has facilitated this significant initiative. An important aspect of the project is the change of site, as the local community in Bureta has provided a new area for the installation of the solar farm.

She emphasized the necessity of adhering to EIA procedures, stating, “No one is exempted from EIA environmental assessment and procedures and conditions.” The developer is working closely with the Department of Environment to ensure that the new site meets all stipulated conditions.

Additionally, this solar farm will be the first project funded by the Green Climate Fund for the Fiji Development Bank, which took nearly five years to secure its $5 million funding. The project will utilize 17 acres of leased land from local villages for the installation of a 4MWp solar power system, while also enabling local communities to engage in farming activities beneath the solar panels, focusing on root crops and vegetables.

This project not only signifies a step forward in renewable energy for Fiji but also promotes sustainable farming, allowing local communities to benefit both environmentally and economically.

In summary, the EIA for the solar project is progressing, with close collaboration between stakeholders to ensure compliance with environmental guidelines, showcasing Fiji’s commitment to sustainable development and green energy initiatives.
