The iTaukei Land Trust Board has reported minimal development in communities despite allocating $100 million in premium lease payments to 5,000 landowning units over the last two years. TLTB regional manager for the North, Bese Buinimasi, noted that this funding was strictly for premium payments and did not include lease money. He highlighted that more than $100 million was distributed to landowners in 2022, with around $120 million allocated in the following year.
During a consultation organized by the Fiji Hardwood Corporation Ltd, Buinimasi stated the goal for the current year is to provide $130 million in leases to landowners. Despite the significant amounts given yearly, he expressed concern that iTaukei communities are not experiencing corresponding developments.
“There is less development being undertaken in iTaukei communities,” he remarked. Buinimasi emphasized the need for a shift in mindset regarding how iTaukei communities spend their lease funds. He acknowledged the unique position of the iTaukei people, who own 91 percent of the land, contrasting with other indigenous groups in the Pacific, such as those in Tonga and New Zealand, who have less land ownership. In comparison, 4 percent of the land is owned by the State, with the remainder being freehold.
