Youth Volleyball Team Aims to Keep Kids Off the Streets

The Hanua Two team is participating in the 2024-2025 Suva Volleyball Pre-Knockout Tournament, aiming to engage youth in volleyball and deter them from criminal activities. In their recent match at the National Netball Centre in Suva, they triumphed over Tamavua Bulls Two, winning by two sets.

The team is comprised of Rotuman youths from the Raiwai community, with standout player Shane Kitione serving as captain. Kitione emphasizes that the team’s main goal is to motivate young players to step beyond their comfort zones and compete in larger tournaments for recognition.

He noted the importance of encouraging these players to explore new experiences, as many have only participated in local suburban competitions. Kitione believes that volleyball can create an environment that shields players from illegal substances and alcohol.

While the team aims to win, Kitione stressed that their ultimate focus is to guide children away from drugs and alcohol. He also encouraged their supporters to strengthen their spiritual understanding by embracing their faith, stating, “Knowing the Lord Jesus is better than anything else to know in the world.”

The competition will continue next weekend.
