The Hanua Two team is actively participating in the 2024-2025 Suva Volleyball Pre-Knockout Tournament with the goal of engaging youth in volleyball and steering them away from criminal activities. In their recent match at the National Netball Centre in Suva, the team secured a victory over Tamavua Bulls Two, winning by two sets.
Comprising mainly Rotuman youths from the Raiwai community, the team is led by standout player Shane Kitione, who also founded the team. Kitione emphasized the importance of encouraging young athletes to step outside their comfort zones and compete at higher levels for greater recognition.
“We need to motivate them to try new experiences, as many have only participated in local matches and have yet to join larger tournaments for exposure,” he explained. Kitione also noted that engaging in the sport provides an alternative environment that helps players avoid drugs and alcohol.
“While every team aims to win, our primary goal is to win our children away from drugs and alcohol,” he stated. In his closing remarks, Kitione encouraged the team’s supporters to strengthen their spiritual understanding by embracing faith. “Knowing the Lord Jesus is better than anything else to know in the world,” he concluded.
The tournament will continue next weekend.
