The first national celebration of International Youth Day was held in Vanua Levu, drawing young people from across the North to the Naulumatua Ground in Bua.
With the theme “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” Youth and Sports Minister Jese Saukuru emphasized the importance of properly utilizing technology to foster development in communities.
“Despite ongoing challenges like the digital divide, our youth, often labeled as ‘digital natives,’ are at the forefront of embracing and innovating with new technologies,” Minister Saukuru remarked.
He noted that they form the largest group of users and developers of digital trends globally.
“As we near the 2030 deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it is crucial to acknowledge that young individuals play a vital role in harnessing the transformative capabilities of technology to tackle worldwide issues,” he stated.
Minister Saukuru mentioned that digital technologies and data are estimated to significantly aid in reaching at least 70% of the 169 SDG targets.
“With 232 measurable indicators, they greatly impact economic, social, and environmental factors,” he explained.
“This highlights the substantial potential of our youth in utilizing digital pathways for sustainable development and in creating a brighter future for future generations.”
As part of the celebrations, the International Youth Day coincided with the launch of the weeklong Bua Youth Festival.
