Youth Cooperatives Cultivating Change in Narewa Village

A dedicated group of young individuals from Narewa Village in Nadi is working to enhance their community through various agricultural initiatives, particularly farming. This group is part of the Sa Dina Youth Cooperative, which comprises 69 members, including youths.

Co-founder Buli Ratu noted that the cooperative has been operational since the 1960s, primarily focused on cassava cultivation. Currently, the cooperative includes 32 youth, 10 women, and 27 men. Ratu emphasized their commitment to agriculture as well as community service, stating they have been actively involved in village clean-up efforts to promote healthy living.

Last year, the cooperative successfully registered with the Ministry of Trade, Cooperatives, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises and Communications. Recently, they received a tractor from the Ministry of Agriculture, with part of the funding supported by the government. Ratu expressed gratitude for the tractor, which will assist in land preparation tasks.

He explained that the group contributed one-third of the total cost for the tractor, highlighting their determination and commitment. Ratu is optimistic about the future, believing that their unity will lead to fruitful outcomes. The youth have adopted the solesolevaki approach, which emphasizes cooperation in farming activities.

The Sa Dina Youth Cooperative has also secured a supply contract with the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa, providing them with vegetables and cassava. Minister for Agriculture Vatimi Rayalu remarked that engaging youth in agriculture is crucial for building stronger, more productive communities.
