Sergeant Zaira Begg, a former titleholder of Miss Fiji from Ba with ties to the village of Nukutubu in Rewa, has made history as the youngest member of her latest deployment to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). This contingent, led by Senior Superintendent of Police Aseri Nakibo, recently set off for their mission, highlighting the Fiji Police Force’s commitment to gender equality with six out of the fourteen members being women.
At just 28 years old and based at the Fiji Police Academy’s Community Policing Department, Sgt. Begg regards her selection for this mission as a powerful manifestation of her faith and a testament to what she describes as God’s divine plan for her life. Reflecting on her journey, she shared that her volunteer work with the Fiji Red Cross Society a decade ago fueled her desire to work in conflict areas, specifically with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Today, she prepares to embark on a new chapter with the Fiji Police Force in South Sudan, attributing her achievements to divine providence.
As the youngest contingent member, Sgt. Begg feels inspired by the extensive experience of her colleagues, whom she sees as mentors in this important duty. She expresses deep gratitude toward God for His guiding hand, the Fiji Police Force for their commitment to empowering young women for international service, and her family and community in Ba for their unwavering support.
This story not only celebrates Sgt. Begg’s accomplishments but also reflects the broader commitment to empowering women in law enforcement and peacekeeping roles. Her journey serves as an inspiration for young women everywhere, underscoring the importance of following one’s dreams and the potential for service to effect positive change in the world.
