Adran Kumar, a Year 12 student from Sabeto College in Nadi, has expressed his gratitude for his mother’s encouragement to enter the 2024 New Zealand-Fiji Secondary School Essay Competition. At just 17 years old, he emerged as the supreme winner of the 16th competition, standing out among over 100 secondary schools and 600 submitted essays.
Initially, Adran struggled with his writing and considered giving up, feeling overwhelmed by the talent of other students. However, his mother motivated him to persevere, which he credits for his eventual success.
His essay focused on sustainable eco-tourism and the importance of preserving Fijian culture and land. Adran believes that eco-tourism highlights the unique identity of the Pacific region and contributes to maintaining local traditions.
In recognition of his achievements, he received $500 in cash, a laptop, and a certificate of recognition. One of the judges, Dr. Satendra Singh, praised the high caliber of submissions, stating that great essays resonate emotionally with readers.
The Deputy High Commissioner of the New Zealand High Commission, Alex Shahryar-Davies, noted the pride in supporting the essay competition for 16 years, highlighting it as an excellent platform for students to enhance their thinking and writing skills.
Other students receiving certificates of recognition included Shresti Devi from Year 11, as well as Kristina Kavita, Shakshi Chand, and Nitish Chand from Year 13.
