Seventeen-year-old Suliano Koro Tuiqalau showcased his abilities by winning a gold medal in the youth category and a silver in the junior category at the 2024 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship, held at the Vodafone Arena.
Originating from Wainiyabia Village in Serua, Tuiqalau expressed his gratitude for the chance to compete and represent his country and family on an international platform. Initially unsure about weightlifting, his interest grew after being introduced to the sport at school and training with his teammates.
“I may not be the strongest lifter in the Fiji team, but after winning the medal, I feel extremely grateful because I did it for my vanua and for my family,” Tuiqalau remarked. “My journey in weightlifting began after the cokes last year; it felt new, but I’m thankful for the experience I’ve gained.”
He mentioned, “The sport was introduced at my school, and I was encouraged to participate. At first, I wasn’t keen, but after my first session in the gym and training alongside my teammates, I became addicted to it.”
Despite the challenges he faced during his intense preparation for the championship, such as learning new techniques and undergoing rigorous training, Tuiqalau remained committed to honing his skills and enhancing his performance.
Looking ahead, Tuiqalau is focused on participating in the upcoming Oceania championships and Minigames. While uncertain about his future in weightlifting, he is receptive to potential opportunities, acknowledging that only time will reveal what lies ahead. The Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship concluded yesterday.
