Lexi Fung, a 14-year-old weightlifter from Canada, made a notable debut at the 2024 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship by winning a silver medal in the youth 45kg category. The championship took place at the Vodafone Arena and featured 19 competitors from Canada, with Lexi’s achievement marking a significant milestone for the team.
Having only been involved in weightlifting for two years, Lexi expressed her excitement about representing Canada on such a prestigious platform for the first time. “It has been two years now I have been part of weightlifting; it’s a new sport for me, and I’m really enjoying it so far,” she said. She added, “This is our first medal in the competition, and my coach is proud of my performance.”
Competing in such a large competition brought some nerves, but Lexi was uplifted by her coach’s encouragement to remain strong and perform her best. She shared, “Being able to participate in a big competition such as this, I got nervous at times, and my coach motivates me to be strong and go out there and do my best.”
During her first visit to Fiji, Lexi has been charmed by the warmth of the local people and the beauty of the surroundings. “I’m loving it so far; the people are friendly, and the place is amazing,” she said. She noted that her teammates will participate later in the event, and this victory serves as motivation for them as they aim for more medals to bring back home.
Lexi expressed her gratitude to her family for their unwavering support and acknowledged her coach for believing in her potential.
