Young Tennis Prodigy Dedicates First Win to Late Mother

Eight-year-old tennis player Sairusi Naivalelevu Mailtorok dedicated his recent victory in the under-12 boys’ singles final to his late mother. Sairusi showcased his talent and determination by winning 8-2 against Nacanieli Dokaninaloma at the Vodafone Suva Tennis Open Championship finals, which took place at Victoria Courts.

This win is particularly meaningful for Sairusi, as he expressed his wish to celebrate with his father while honoring his mother, whom he believes is watching over him from above. He began playing tennis at the age of four and credits his father for teaching him the sport and nurturing his passion for it.

“I started playing tennis when I was four years old. My dad always teaches me how to play, and getting into the sport makes me really feel good,” said Mailtorok. “This is my first win, so it is special to me. I hope my mom was here to see me win.”

As he enjoys the moment of his first victory, Sairusi dreams of someday becoming a professional tennis player and representing his country on the international stage. Despite competing against a 12-year-old opponent in the finals, his determination and skill led to this significant achievement. In a gesture of gratitude, he dedicated his win to his father, mother, and everyone who has supported him on his journey.
