Rayna Chand’s unwavering dedication to her studies has culminated in a remarkable achievement; she topped the Fiji Eighth Year Examination in the Northern Division. The 13-year-old head girl of Wainikoro Public School in Macuata earned an impressive score of 485 out of 500, marking a historic milestone for her school.
Her exceptional results include 97 in English, 94 in Mathematics, a perfect 100 in Basic Science, 97 in Healthy Living, 97 in Social Science, and 88 in Hindi. This accomplishment is particularly significant as it is the first time WPS has achieved such high marks in the region.
In her gratitude, Rayna expressed her appreciation towards her parents, her class teacher, and all her subject teachers. “I feel proud to be the first student at my school to score the highest marks in Vanua Levu,” said Rayna, a native of Taganikula. She emphasized her motivation to excel in her studies, particularly to make her parents proud. Her father works as an electrician in Suva, while her mother is an administrative staff member at the school. Rayna noted that she often studied late into the night and started her day at 4 am to ensure she was well-prepared.
Rayna, who has consistently held the top position in her class since Year One, aspires to become a doctor. She acknowledged that while she faced challenges like any other student, she refused to let these obstacles hinder her pursuit of success. Her mother, Shareeni Lal, expressed pride in Rayna’s achievements and announced plans to enroll her in Labasa College for further studies.
Wainikoro Public School’s head teacher, Rajesh Kumar, also celebrated Rayna’s accomplishments, thanking the Ministry of Education’s Labasa office, particularly divisional education officer Iliseva Volai and senior education officer Dharmendra Dayal, for their guidance and support in reaching this remarkable achievement. Mr. Kumar reiterated that this success marks the first time the school has recorded the highest marks in the North, and he expressed pride on behalf of the school’s management. Rayna was also acknowledged as the school’s dux for the year.
