Young Scholar Aims to Transform Healthcare in Her Community

Gurneet Kaur, the head girl of Waiqele Primary School, has proudly achieved her goal of becoming the dux of Year Eight, fulfilling a promise made to her parents. Demonstrating exceptional academic capability, Gurneet attained the highest scores in both the annual examination and the Fiji Eighth Year Examination (FEYE), achieving an impressive 526 out of 600 marks.

Hailing from Kawakawa Settlement and being the youngest of three siblings, Gurneet dedicated herself to her studies, often studying late into the night and during weekends. At just 13 years old, she has consistently ranked first in her class since Year One, a testament to her commitment and hard work.

Inspired by the challenges her community faces in accessing medical care, Gurneet aspires to become the first doctor in her family. She expressed her desire to provide immediate medical assistance to those in her settlement, alleviating the struggles of those who must travel long distances for healthcare. “I want to help my people by providing immediate medical care when needed and alleviate the fear of early death or losing body parts due to diabetes,” she stated.

In acknowledging her journey, Gurneet expressed gratitude to her parents and teachers for their support in achieving her academic goals. She takes pride in her rural background and aims to inspire others to excel in education, regardless of their circumstances, showing that anyone can make a difference in their communities.
