At just 20 years old, Riya Bhagwan’s strong desire to engage with grassroots communities and advocate for vulnerable populations drives her passion for journalism. Originally from Nadi, Riya is a second-year student at the University of the South Pacific, where she studies journalism and social work.
Growing up in a family of entrepreneurs operating an electronics business and a spice trade, Riya’s early exposure to media included reading daily newspapers and watching evening news broadcasts her parents followed closely. Her interest in journalism began during her Year 12 studies at Sangam SKM College, where participating in public speaking and taking on leadership roles shifted her interest away from International Business and Marketing towards a more hands-on career.
Riya draws inspiration from her grandfather, Mr. Bharat Morris, a former reporter with the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation. His stories about the demanding nature of journalism—a field that requires constant vigilance and adaptability—compelled Riya to embrace the challenges it entails.
Reflecting on her experience in the USP Journalism program, she emphasizes the importance of not solely relying on theoretical knowledge but becoming practical and independent thinkers. Her various practical assignments have deepened her love for journalism, and she aspires to focus her work on issues affecting women, children, and marginalized communities in Fiji. Riya is particularly interested in investigative journalism to uncover hidden social issues.
Despite recognizing the competitiveness and stringent deadlines in the local media landscape, she believes this pressure can strengthen journalists, helping them build resilience. Riya acknowledges the challenges and stigma associated with the profession but encourages aspiring journalists to pursue the field with genuine passion rather than for fame or financial reward.
By remaining committed to principles of fairness and balance, Riya believes that journalists can make meaningful impacts on society, inspiring others to follow their dreams in a challenging yet fulfilling profession.
This story serves as a beacon of hope for those passionate about journalism, highlighting how dedication and determination can empower individuals to advocate for change. Riya Bhagwan’s journey exemplifies how the pursuit of passion can lead to impactful careers focused on social justice.
