Young Journalist Riya Bhagwan: A Passion for Social Change

Spread the love

Riya Bhagwan, a 20-year-old journalism and social work student from Nadi, is on a mission to amplify the voices of marginalized communities through her passion for journalism. Currently in her second year at the University of the South Pacific, Riya’s commitment to her studies is fueled by her desire to engage with grassroots issues affecting vulnerable populations.

Growing up in a family of business owners in Suva, Lautoka, and Nadi, Riya was influenced by her parents’ entrepreneurial spirit as they also manage a spice trade. Her initial interest in news media sparked from her daily exposure to newspapers and the evening news, but it was her experiences in school that truly ignited her passion for journalism. She credits her leadership roles and public speaking engagements in high school for steering her away from a potential career in International Business and Marketing toward journalism.

A significant source of inspiration for Riya comes from her grandfather, Mr. Bharat Morris, a former reporter for the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation. His stories about the demanding nature of journalism have shaped her understanding of the profession as a 24-hour commitment filled with challenges and opportunities.

Throughout her studies at USP, Riya emphasizes the importance of blending theoretical knowledge with practical skills. She believes that real-world experience is essential for student journalists, sharing how practical assignments have deepened her love for the field. Riya aims to focus her future work on critical issues surrounding women, children, and marginalized communities, drawing from her social work studies to highlight the ongoing struggles for equality in Fiji.

While Riya recognizes the increasing competitiveness and pressure within the local media industry, she also sees these challenges as opportunities for growth and resilience. She acknowledges the potential drawbacks of tight deadlines, especially for investigative journalism, but believes that staying committed to ethical reporting can lead to meaningful change.

Encouraging aspiring journalists, Riya advises them to pursue the profession out of passion rather than for monetary gain or fame. She emphasizes that determination and a strong sense of justice are key to making a significant impact. Riya’s dedication and vision for a better future through journalism reflect a hopeful outlook amidst the complexities of the field.

This inspiring story not only highlights the journey of a young journalist but also serves as a reminder of the vital role of media in championing social change. Riya Bhagwan represents the next generation of journalists dedicated to making a difference and lifting the voices of the underrepresented in society.
