A dedicated group of young individuals from Narewa Village in Nadi is focused on enhancing their community through agricultural initiatives, particularly farming. This group is part of the Sa Dina Youth Cooperative, which comprises 69 members from various demographics, including youth.
Co-founder Buli Ratu noted that the cooperative has been functioning since the 1960s, primarily engaging in cassava farming. The current membership includes 32 youth, 10 women, and 27 men. Ratu emphasized their commitment not only to agriculture but also to community service, highlighting their efforts in maintaining a clean village for better health.
Last year, they officially registered as a cooperative with the Ministry of Trade, Cooperatives, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises and Communications. Recently, the group received a tractor from the Ministry of Agriculture, with part of the funding supported by the government.
Ratu expressed the group’s gratitude for gaining access to a tractor, which will significantly aid their land preparation efforts. He remarked on their ability to contribute one-third of the total tractor cost, showcasing their determination.
He emphasized the importance of unity among members to achieve significant outcomes in their future endeavors. The youth are also employing the solesolevaki method, a collaborative farming approach that encourages mutual assistance.
The Sa Dina Youth Cooperative has established a contract with Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa to supply vegetables and cassava. Minister for Agriculture Vatimi Rayalu remarked that involving young people in agriculture is crucial for building stronger and more productive communities.
