Young Farmer’s Journey: Transforming Land into Gold

Petero Maciu, a 21-year-old from Nawi, Buca Bay in Cakaudrove, has harnessed the power of agriculture to improve his living conditions. With support from his father, Sakapo Tui, he began farming in his youth, which has become a crucial aspect of his life.

As the second youngest in a family of five, Petero and his relatives reside in their hometown. He reached the eighth grade academically but chose not to continue his studies after recognizing the benefits of farming, which he believes can also yield significant returns.

In 2020, he vowed to enhance his farming efforts to better his prospects, committing to not rely on handouts from anyone. Petero cultivates crops as part of the Koronicivaciva clan, growing five varieties, including yaqona, dalo, jaina, niu, and various vegetables.

This year, Petero has emphasized his yaqona, selling it at the Labasa market. He has documented how effective agricultural practices can lead to financial stability. Currently, he is selling yaqona in Savusavu for between $70 and $80 per kilogram and has earned approximately $11,000 from his sales.

Petero’s farming plot spans about five kilometers, which he diligently works daily to ensure a prosperous yield. Despite the challenges, including occasional struggles with rough weather, Petero remains dedicated to improving his life through agriculture.

He encourages other youth in his community to seize the opportunity to engage in farming and use their time productively. He hopes the government will become more involved in providing support so that young people can start their own farms and thrive.

Petero is currently seeking additional resources, such as farming equipment and fresh produce, to develop his farming operations further. He aims to enhance roads to facilitate the transportation of his products, ensuring they reach markets effectively.

His long-term dream includes building a home and acquiring a tractor to assist with his farming endeavors. Despite the numerous hurdles he faces, including adverse weather conditions that can hinder his work, Petero remains focused on maximizing the agricultural potential of his land, stressing the importance of sustainable farming practices to uplift his community.
