Petero Maciu, a 21-year-old farmer from Nawi, Buca Bay, Cakaudrove, is making significant strides in utilizing his land for his livelihood. He started farming at a young age, encouraged by his father, Sakapo Tui, to make effective use of their agricultural land.
Petero has five siblings and is the second youngest, living with his family in their village. His education was cut short after completing year eight, as he recognized the value of farming and the resources it could provide compared to further schooling.
In 2020, he made a commitment to focus on his farming practice and avoid reliance on others. He cultivates yams, taro, cassava, coconuts, and a variety of vegetables on family land specifically belonging to the Koronicivaciva clan. This year, he has taken to the market in Labasa to sell his produce, including yams which fetch between $70 and $80 per kilo.
From his first sales, he has reportedly made around $11,000. His farming area stretches approximately five kilometers, and he consistently works hard to improve his yield, understanding the importance of his agricultural endeavors in combating poverty.
Petero often spends time in the fields, even seeking shade under trees when necessary. He believes that effective land use is essential for success and practicality in life. His agricultural efforts have greatly benefited not only himself but his family as well, helping them financially and providing food.
In July, just before his 21st birthday, he prepared two bullocks to celebrate his achievement with the community. Recently, he sold some produce to ease the burden of managing his crops and animals.
His story serves as an inspiring example for young people in his village, showing that they can make productive use of their time and talents. He hopes that the government and community will support them in leveraging their land for better opportunities.
Petero is currently looking for assistance in acquiring farming equipment and improving access to distribution networks for his goods. He has aspirations of building a home and expanding his agricultural activities, including plans to purchase a tractor to aid his work.
He acknowledges the challenges posed by adverse weather conditions and remains committed to the land, urging his peers to take advantage of the resources available in their community. Petero emphasizes the need for the youth to heed the guidance of their elders and stay devoted to their farming practices, as they hold potential for future prosperity.
