A young farmer, Petero Maciu, has been utilizing his land to sustain his living. At just 21 years old, Petero hails from Nawi, Buca Bay, Cakaudrove. His agricultural journey began during his childhood, encouraged by his father Sakapo Tui to make the most of the land he has.
Petero, who is the second of five siblings, shares his home with his relatives in the village. He completed his education up to class eight but chose not to continue due to the promising prospects of farming, which he believes offers significant returns along with his studies.
In 2020, he decided to start his own farming venture, focusing on crops that would allow him to become self-sufficient. He cultivates a variety of crops including yaqona, taro, ginger, coconut, and various vegetables. This year, he has expanded his yaqona production, which he sells at the Labasa market, where prices range from $70 to $80 per kilogram.
From his initial sales, he has already earned approximately $11,000. His farm, which spans around five kilometers, is a daily commitment for Petero as he works towards improving his livelihood and escaping poverty. Occasionally, he finds himself working in the bush to ease his tasks.
Petero believes that his successful land use greatly contributes to his well-being and that all the work he does requires patience. The benefits he gains help support his family, covering household expenses and buying food and other necessities.
In March of this year, as he celebrates his 21st birthday, Petero is preparing for a community celebration by offering two cattle to share joy with fellow villagers. Recently, he sold one of his harvests to ease the cost of his yaqona and food for the market.
His efforts serve as an inspiration for young people in the village, showing that productive use of time can lead to fruitful outcomes. He hopes the government will recognize and assist the youth in establishing businesses and improving their livelihoods.
Currently, Petero seeks more assistance with farming supplies and food production. He hopes to enhance the accessibility of market roads and improve the transportation of his goods. His goal is to further develop himself and the community, including potentially building his own house and acquiring a tractor for easier farming practices.
Despite facing challenges such as adverse weather conditions affecting his farming, Petero remains optimistic about the land’s potential. He emphasizes the importance of using land wisely for the benefit of both current and future generations.
“Let us turn away from a life of reliance and listen closely to our elders, while always being grateful to God for our blessings,” he said.
