The Yasawa district team is enthusiastic as they gear up for the two-day Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, which kick off today at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. This exciting event will see 2,000 young athletes from 21 districts across Fiji coming together to compete.

Isireli Koroituku, the jump coach for Yasawa, expressed the team’s determination to not just participate but to clinch medals to take back home. With a contingent of 105 athletes representing eight local schools, Koroituku shared that their preparations have been going smoothly, and they are eager for the competition ahead.

Unlike last year, when the focus was primarily on exposing athletes to experience, the team is now set on winning medals. Koroituku acknowledged the challenges they faced while preparing for this event, particularly in securing accommodation, but they managed to overcome these hurdles.

Fundraising efforts, including selling root crops and hosting curry nights, helped gather the necessary support. Koroituku extended his sincere gratitude to the Yasawa community and regional supporters for their invaluable assistance. He emphasized that the team’s journey would not have been possible without the backing of everyone involved.

Many of the athletes are traveling to Suva for the first time, making this an eye-opening experience for them. Alongside Yasawa, six districts from the Western Division will participate with 718 athletes, while the Northern Division will bring 635, and the Central and Eastern divisions have confirmed 597 athletes.

With such strong community support and a focus on achievement, the Yasawa district team is poised for a memorable and successful experience at the Games.

This article highlights the determination and unity within community teams, showcasing how local support and a collective spirit can significantly impact young athletes’ experiences and aspirations. It’s a great reminder of the positive influence of sports on youth development.
