The Yasawa district team has set ambitious goals for the upcoming two-day Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, which kick off today at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium. This year’s event will welcome around 2,000 young athletes representing 21 districts from across the nation.

Isireli Koroituku, the jump coach for the Yasawa district team, emphasized their intent to not just participate, but to bring home medals. “Our team has 105 athletes this year from eight schools in our district. Preparations have been going well, and we’re excited to compete,” he stated.

Koroituku noted that while last year’s participation focused primarily on exposing the athletes to competition, this year’s objective centers around achieving success and winning medals. He acknowledged the challenges the team faced in preparing for the games, including securing accommodation. However, the team managed to overcome these hurdles. “We had to stay positive throughout the process,” he remarked.

To fund their journey, the team engaged in various fundraising activities including selling root crops, kava barrels, and hosting curry nights. Koroituku expressed deep gratitude to the Yasawa community and local stakeholders for their support, which played a critical role in making their participation possible.

The competition also sees significant representation from the Western Division with 718 athletes, while the Northern region is bringing 635 athletes, and the Central and Eastern divisions have confirmed 597 participants.

This event not only serves as a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents but also fosters a sense of community and collaboration among the districts. The excitement surrounding the games is palpable, and the Yasawa team stands as a testament to the determination and spirit of young athletes striving for excellence.

In summary, the Yasawa district team is ready to compete in the Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games with high hopes of winning medals while cultivating pride in their community. This event promises not only to highlight athletic talents but also to enrich the experiences of all involved.
