The Yasawa district team has ambitious goals as they participate in the two-day Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, which kick off today at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium. The event is expected to see around 2,000 athletes from 21 districts nationwide.

Speaking to SUNsports, Yasawa’s jump coach, Isireli Koroituku, emphasized that the team is focused not only on participation but on securing medals to bring back home. This year, the Yasawa team comprises 105 athletes recruited from eight schools within the district. Koroituku noted that preparations have been going well, and the team is eager for the competition ahead.

Unlike the previous year, when the focus was primarily on exposure for the athletes, this year’s team is determined to achieve podium finishes. Koroituku acknowledged the challenges the team faced en route to the competition, particularly regarding accommodation. However, they persevered and managed to find lodging just days before the event.

Fundraising efforts by the team included selling root crops, kava barrels, and hosting curry nights, showcasing their community spirit. Koroituku expressed gratitude to the Yasawa community, local ‘Tikinas,’ and shareholders for their unwavering support. He reflected on how essential this backing has been for their journey.

For many athletes, this marks their first visit to Suva, providing them with a valuable and enriching experience. The competition features a strong representation from the Western Division with 718 athletes, while the Northern Division brings 635, and the Central and Eastern divisions have a combined total of 597 athletes ready for action.

By focusing on teamwork and unity, the Yasawa team exemplifies the spirit of competition, showcasing not just athletic prowess but also community dedication. This event is a remarkable opportunity for young athletes to embrace new experiences and foster relationships that extend beyond the sports field.

In summary, the Yasawa district team is geared up for the Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, determined to achieve success and represent their community with pride. Their journey underscores the importance of community support and resilience in pursuing their goals.
