The Yasawa district team has set its sights high as they prepare for the Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, which commence today at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium. This year, the Games will feature 2,000 athletes representing 21 districts from across the nation.
Isireli Koroituku, the jump coach for the Yasawa district team, emphasized that their participation goes beyond mere attendance; they aim to secure medals to bring pride back to their community. “We have 105 athletes this year from eight schools in the district,” Koroituku remarked. He noted that while last year’s focus was on gaining experience, this time, the team is determined to achieve success.
Koroituku reflected on the challenges the team faced leading up to the competition, including securing accommodations. Despite these hurdles, their preparations have been promising, and the team remains optimistic. They managed to find lodging shortly before the event, maintaining a positive outlook throughout the process.
Fundraising efforts played a crucial role in their journey to the Games, with the team selling root crops, kava, and hosting curry nights to gather support. Koroituku expressed sincere gratitude towards the Yasawa community, local leaders, and stakeholders for their encouragement and assistance.
“This journey wouldn’t have been possible without everyone’s support. We are honored to represent our district and motivated to win medals,” he stated. Notably, many athletes are traveling to Suva for the first time, making it an enlightening experience for them.
In total, the Western Division has sent six districts with 718 athletes, while the North is represented by 635, and the Central and Eastern divisions have confirmed 597 participants for the Games.
This event is not just a competition but a celebration of youth, teamwork, and community support, showcasing the talent and determination of young athletes from different regions. The camaraderie and shared experiences gained during these games will undoubtedly inspire future generations.
