Yalobi’s New Evacuation Centre: A Lifeline for Future Disasters

A newly upgraded risk-informed evacuation centre was inaugurated for the villagers of Yalobi in Waya, Yasawa, on Wednesday. The facility is capable of accommodating over 200 individuals in the face of future disasters.

This infrastructure was developed by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management in collaboration with the UN Development Programme’s Governance for Resilient Development in the Pacific project (Gov4Res), at a cost exceeding FJ$60,000.

The centre addresses multiple risks faced by vulnerable groups in the Yalobi community. It features ramps for accessibility for people with disabilities, an indoor kitchen, washrooms, and solar lighting. These enhancements aim to ensure the safety and security of women, children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities during natural disasters.

During the inauguration, local residents shared memories of the harrowing experience during Tropical Cyclone Bebe in 1972, when they had to trek up a hill for three hours to find refuge in a cave. In more recent events, villagers had no proper evacuation facility and sought shelter in their homes. Community members expressed their gratitude to the government, donors, and UNDP for this vital assistance, acknowledging its contribution to improving their safety and welfare.

Jovesa Vocea, Assistant Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, highlighted the significance of incorporating risk-informed strategies into rural development to ensure long-term resilience. He noted that the Yalobi Risk Informed Evacuation Centre represents a strong commitment by the Ministry to integrate risk assessment into all development efforts.

Vocea stated, “The Yalobi Evacuation Centre is a lifeline for the residents of this village, not merely a building.” He also mentioned that during peaceful times, the centre would serve as a hub for community initiatives aimed at empowering local residents, particularly women and youth.

Furthermore, the centre will host various socio-economic activities designed to uplift the Yalobi community. Nicola Glendining, Project Manager for UNDP Pacific Gov4Res, added that the UNDP is proud to collaborate with the Ministry to enhance the resilience of rural communities in Fiji and align with the Ministry’s strategic priorities.
