“Yalobi Celebrates New Evacuation Centre: A Lifeline for Disaster Preparedness”

An upgraded risk-informed evacuation center has been inaugurated for the villagers of Yalobi in Waya, Yasawa. This facility, capable of accommodating over 200 individuals during disasters, was developed by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, in collaboration with the UN Development Programme (UNDP) through the Governance for Resilient Development in the Pacific project, at a total cost exceeding FJ$60,000.

The center is designed to mitigate several risks faced by vulnerable community members, featuring ramps for accessibility for individuals with disabilities, an indoor kitchen, washrooms, and solar lighting. These enhancements aim to ensure the safety and security of women, children, the elderly, and disabled individuals in the event of a natural disaster.

During the inauguration, residents recounted the harrowing experience of Tropical Cyclone Bebe in 1972, which forced them to ascend into the mountains for refuge. In more recent disasters, villagers had to take shelter in their homes due to the absence of a proper evacuation facility. They expressed their gratitude to the Government, donors, and UNDP for this timely project, highlighting its significance in enhancing their safety and overall well-being.

Jovesa Vocea, the Assistant Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, stressed the importance of incorporating risk assessments into rural and maritime development efforts for long-term resilience. He noted that the Yalobi Risk Informed Evacuation Centre symbolizes the Ministry’s dedication to ensuring that all development initiatives account for potential risks.

Vocea described the evacuation center as a crucial resource for the village’s residents, emphasizing that it will not only serve as a shelter during emergencies but also function as a hub for community initiatives promoting empowerment, especially for women and youth. Furthermore, the center will host various socio-economic activities aimed at strengthening the local community of Yalobi.

Nicola Glendining, Project Manager for the UNDP Pacific Gov4Res, expressed pride in collaborating with the Ministry to enhance the resilience of rural communities in Fiji and implement strategic priorities.
