World Hydrography Day: Fiji Celebrates Importance of Hydrography and Maritime Safety

World Hydrography Day, observed globally on June 21, was adopted by the International Hydrographic Organization to highlight the work of hydrographers and the significance of hydrography.

In 2024, the theme was “Hydrographic information – enhancing safety, efficiency, and sustainability in marine activities,” reflecting the ongoing changes in navigation such as e-navigation, autonomous shipping, and emission reductions, all driving profound evolution in hydrographic services.

To commemorate the day in Fiji, a two-day seminar was held on June 27 and 28. Given Fiji’s 1.3 million square kilometers of exclusive economic zone, the Fiji Hydrographic Service plays a crucial role in providing expertise for this maritime nation.

The Fiji Hydrographic Service (FHS) was established in March 1970 and has been operational for over 54 years. Under the Fiji Maritime Transport Act 2013, the FHS, administered by the Fiji Navy, is responsible for providing hydrographic services as mandated by the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention and the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO). The FHS has been an IHO member since 1982.

Initially, a unit within the Marine Department funded by the United Nations, the FHS has significantly evolved. The service collects and compiles hydrographic data, maintains and disseminates hydrographic information, nautical publications, and charts, and authorizes the use of these charts in Fiji.
