Celebrating Unity: A Powerful Call for Women's Rights in Fiji

Women Unite: A Concert for Change in Fiji

Over 270 individuals gathered at Ratu Sukuna Park in Suva to attend the International Women’s Day concert, an important event organized by the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement (FWRM). This year’s theme, “If Women Stop, the World Stops,” highlights the critical but often overlooked unpaid care activities performed by women. The concert has been celebrated annually since 2020, aiming to raise awareness of these essential contributions.

Serelisoni Moceica, FWRM’s Communications Officer, spoke about the concert’s significance as a platform to combat gender inequalities. She pointed out that the historical essence of protest linked to International Women’s Day, which began in 1910, is reflected in the gathering. The event offered a voice to various women’s organizations to share their struggles and advocate for necessary changes.

Moceica remarked, “The concert is not just an event; it’s a space for amplifying the issues women encounter and calling for action.” This year saw 271 registered attendees, exceeding expectations, with many more participants joining on the day despite registration closing beforehand.

The concert featured performances from notable singer Laisa Vulakoro, who also provided a platform for emerging female artists, thus enhancing the event’s inclusivity.

The increased participation highlights a growing commitment within the community to support women’s rights and gender equality. The involvement of a wide range of organizations underscores the collective effort needed to tackle persistent gender disparities. Previous events in Fiji have shown that such gatherings serve as a strong reminder of the ongoing need for advocacy and support for women’s issues.

Ultimately, the concert not only honors the achievements of women but also reinforces the dedication to creating an equitable society for future generations. It embodies a spirit of hope, encouraging the belief that unity and awareness can drive positive change, paving the way for a world where women’s contributions are recognized and cherished.
