Women at War: Social Media’s Toxic Love Triangle

The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC) has expressed concern over the increasing number of women engaging in conflicts and displaying animosity towards each other on social media. During a recent live video discussion on the FWCC social media platform, counsellor advocate Lavenia Tuitabu posed the question of who instigates these disputes and the pain that ensues among women at odds with one another.

Tuitabu highlighted that these conflicts often arise when a woman discovers that her partner is involved with another woman. This situation leads to confrontations between the women, which typically play out on social media as they express their animosity.

She noted that, despite the emotional pain they endure, women tend to defend their partners while launching attacks on the other party. “In the midst of this drama, women often set aside the men involved and direct hurtful comments at one another,” Tuitabu remarked.

Furthermore, she pointed out that the male figures in these situations generally remain unaffected and indifferent to the emotional distress faced by both women, effectively manipulating them. “When conflict arises, it prompts us to ask who is truly responsible for this situation; more often than not, it is the man,” she stated.

The repercussions of these personal disputes can be severe, leading to the public shaming of women as their pictures circulate online accompanied by derogatory comments.
