“Women at the Helm: A Historic Voyage to the Pacific Islands Leaders Forum”

The 16-member crew of the ‘Uto ni Yalo’ arrived in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, after a seven-day voyage, just in time for the Pacific Islands Leaders Forum Meeting that commenced on Monday. The ‘Uto ni Yalo’ represents regional unity and highlights the deep connection its crew has with the ocean and traditional navigation practices.

A notable aspect of this journey was the presence of Iva Vunikura, who served as the sail master, a position typically held by men. Vunikura has been part of the ‘Uto ni Yalo’ crew for 12 years and has sailed over 80,000 nautical miles during her career, including trips from Fiji to Mexico and extensive travel within the region.

Reflecting on the voyage, she remarked on the challenges faced due to unfavorable winds but expressed pride in their perseverance that brought them to their destination. Vunikura, hailing from Vione, Gau, is one of three women on the vessel and finds peace in the vastness of the Pacific Ocean.
