Shamima Ali, the coordinator of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC), has voiced her concerns over Women’s Minister Lynda Tabuya’s recent endorsement of Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu for the presidency. Ali is perplexed by Tabuya’s statement describing Ratu Naiqama as a “male champion” who has helped dismantle the cycle of patriarchy in Fiji.

Ali emphasized the need for clarification from Tabuya on how Ratu Naiqama has actively contributed to breaking down patriarchal systems throughout the country. She criticized the endorsement as contrary to the principles outlined in the National Action Plan (NAP) aimed at eliminating violence against women and girls. Ali questioned the rationale behind endorsing a figure known for his disrespect towards women after the collaborative efforts made to create the NAP, which has seen input from both the government and civil society over the past five years.

In a response, Minister Tabuya acknowledged Ali’s concerns and affirmed that her endorsement was informed by her own experiences in leadership roles within both Opposition and Government. She asserted that her support for Ratu Naiqama does not undermine the FWCC’s contributions or the objectives of the NAP. Tabuya reaffirmed her commitment to implementing the NAP, backed by the Coalition Government and international partners.

Furthermore, Tabuya emphasized the importance of national unity, encouraging collaboration and respectful communication among all members of society, regardless of their background. She highlighted educational reforms, proposing the teaching of iTaukei and Hindi languages in schools, and advocated for the adoption of a Racial Harmony Act to foster greater social cohesion in Fiji.

This dialogue reflects the complexities of navigating women’s rights and representation within political frameworks, illustrating the ongoing discussions about leadership and gender equality in Fiji. It also highlights the importance of ensuring that high-profile endorsements align with the broader goals of advancing women’s rights and dismantling systemic inequalities.

As Fiji moves forward, it is essential for leaders to engage in constructive dialogue and ensure that their actions and endorsements promote a society where every individual, regardless of gender, is valued and respected.
