A 40-year-old woman is scheduled to appear in court today, facing charges of Obtaining Financial Advantage. The charges stem from an incident on July 24, 2024, in which she allegedly deceived a victim into transferring $165 through the M-Paisa platform.
According to police investigations, the victim discovered a Facebook post advertising an iPhone for sale priced at $330. Interested in purchasing the phone, the victim contacted the accused, who instructed her to send a deposit of $165, assuring her that the phone would be dispatched via courier.
After sending the deposit, the victim was unable to reach the accused and subsequently reported the incident to the Tavua Police Station. The Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce Team took action, leading to the woman’s arrest. She is currently in custody and is expected to be brought before the Magistrates Court in Nabouwalu.
This case highlights the importance of vigilance in online transactions and serves as a reminder for consumers to ensure the legitimacy of sellers to prevent falling victim to scams. It is hopeful that the judiciary will address such issues firmly to deter fraudulent activities in the future while also promoting awareness of safe online practices.
