A witness in the corruption case against former Fiji Fisheries and Forestry Minister, Kalaveti Ravu, and former Ministry Regional Manager, Tekata Toisi, has left the country for employment overseas. This development was disclosed in the Suva Magistrates Court during proceedings today. State Counsel from the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC), Lavenia Ravuikadavu, informed the court that the witness is now employed in Noumea, New Caledonia, and that the Prosecution was made aware of this situation just this morning.
In response to the witness’s relocation, the Prosecution is planning to request that the witness’s testimony be presented via Skype. The ongoing case involves serious allegations against Ravu, claiming he obstructed an investigation by the Ministry of Fisheries concerning illegal trade of critically endangered beche-de-mer species between July and August 2023. Toisi is accused of being an accomplice in Ravu’s alleged abuse of power.
Both defense counsels expressed the need for additional time to assess the documents supplied by the Prosecution before the next court date. Magistrate Jeremaia Savou has noted an application filed by Ravu, which the Prosecution aims to contest.
The case has been adjourned until January 23, 2025, for further proceedings, with both Ravu and Toisi remaining on bail.
This court case underscores the broader commitment of FICAC in pursuing allegations of corruption in Fiji, ensuring that high-profile figures are held accountable. The utilization of modern technology such as Skype for witness testimony exemplifies a progressive approach towards maintaining the momentum of legal proceedings despite unforeseen circumstances, such as the witness’s relocation.
While the ongoing case raises serious concerns about corruption, it also highlights the legal system’s dedication to transparency and due process. The forthcoming hearings will play a crucial role in determining the accountability of public officials and the integrity of public service in Fiji.
