Daniel Whippy, the Managing Director of Carpenters Fiji, has officially entered a not guilty plea regarding the corruption charges filed against him. He faces one count of ‘counseling for the omission of the offense’ connected to an incident involving John O’Connor, the former Chairman of the National Fire Authority, who is charged with ‘abuse of office.’
The charges relate to a fire that occurred at the Carpenters Fiji property, MH Warehouse, in Walu Bay back in 2018. As part of the conditions set by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) to allow Whippy to travel to the United States for urgent stem cell treatment, he was required to submit his plea.
FICAC’s Senior State Counsel, Sera Fatafehi, emphasized the importance of Whippy’s plea, warning that if he were to leave the country without returning, the trial would proceed in his absence. Whippy’s attorney has stressed that his client has a constitutional right to health care and requires the treatment without delay.
The court has accepted two sureties, each at a $20,000 bond, to ensure that Whippy returns for his court proceedings. FICAC did not oppose this arrangement. Additionally, Whippy has been granted the release of his passport to apply for a medical visa to the U.S. However, a deposit of $50,000 in the court registry is required to stay in place.
The allegations assert that between January 1 and September 28, 2018, O’Connor, while serving as the Chair of the National Fire Authority Board, misused his authority by instructing NFA officers to alter their findings in a fire investigation report pertaining to the MH Warehouse incident, an act believed to be for personal gain. It is claimed that Whippy advised O’Connor during this process.
The case is set to be mentioned again on the 19th of this month concerning the bail application and the pending visa request, while a stop departure order remains in effect.
In summary, Whippy’s legal journey unfolds amidst serious allegations while he prioritizes his health. This situation emphasizes the complexity of navigating legal charges while addressing urgent medical needs, and it highlights the importance of ensuring due process in the judicial system. The court’s considerations show a commitment to balancing legal accountability with individual rights, reflecting a hopeful approach to justice that upholds both law and human compassion.
