Westpac has introduced online financial literacy training for Fijians, enabling participants to join from the comfort of their homes or workplaces. This initiative is thought to be the first of its kind in the Fijian market, transitioning from previous face-to-face sessions held with community groups, customers, and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME).
Shane Smith, Chief Executive of Westpac Fiji, highlighted the bank’s use of social media to reach a broader audience, encouraging Fijians to enhance their skills in areas such as budgeting, planning, saving, and financial management throughout their lives. “We’re proud to be one of the first banks in Fiji to explore virtual training sessions for financial literacy and encourage interested individuals to attend these free sessions,” Mr. Smith stated.
At the conclusion of the course, participants receive a certificate and resource materials to assist them on their financial journey. Prior to the public launch, Westpac hosted an internal virtual session for its staff, which saw over 50 employees participating.
In the past nine months, from October 2023 to July 2024, Westpac has conducted complimentary financial literacy training sessions for nearly 6,000 Fijians. Participants have the option to choose between two training programs: Financial First Steps for families and Business Basics.
This initiative underscores Westpac’s dedication to promoting sustainable business practices and economic growth within Fiji.
