The Office of the Divisional Commissioner North is actively preparing for expected wet weather conditions in the coming 48 hours. Divisional Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima convened with leaders from essential services such as the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), police, fire services, the Ministry of Education, the Fiji Red Cross, and the Fiji Meteorological Services to finalize operational plans. The aim is to ensure that resources are allocated effectively to assist communities that may be affected by the adverse weather.

Despite heavy rainfall overnight, the FRA confirmed that the main roads across the island remain clear, maintaining accessibility. The Fiji Meteorological Service has provided timely updates and forecasts that aid stakeholders in fine-tuning their preparedness strategies.

As part of the emergency measures, the Ministry of Education has been alerted to prepare schools as potential evacuation centers if required. Residents in low-lying areas are strongly encouraged to prepare for possible evacuations and to seek higher ground during daylight to mitigate risks. Nighttime movement should be limited to enhance safety and to reduce the burden on emergency responders. Those unsure about evacuation routes or in need of help should reach out to local authorities or the police.

In a proactive directive, Rainima has advised farmers to relocate their livestock to safe areas and take precautions to protect their agricultural livelihoods. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety and staying informed through weather advisories, urging everyone to take early action in their preparations.

The Commissioner’s Office will keep a vigilant watch on the situation and will provide updates as necessary.

This proactive approach not only underscores the preparedness of local authorities but also serves as a reminder of the importance of community resilience in the face of natural challenges. Building such collaboration among various services and facilitating clear communication will be crucial in assuring residents’ safety.
