The Office of the Divisional Commissioner North is actively preparing for anticipated wet weather conditions expected within the next 48 hours. Earlier today, Divisional Commissioner Uraia Rainima convened with leaders from various essential services, including the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), police, fire services, the Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, and Fiji Meteorological Services, among others. Their goal is to finalize operational plans and ensure that resources are primed to assist affected communities.
Despite heavy rainfall during the night, the FRA has confirmed that the connecting roads throughout the island are still clear and passable. The Fiji Meteorological Service has provided a detailed weather forecast, allowing community leaders to enhance their strategies for preparedness.
In response to potential flooding, the Ministry of Education has been notified to prepare schools to function as evacuation centers, should the need arise. Residents living in low-lying areas are strongly encouraged to take precautions and relocate to higher ground during daylight hours to mitigate risks. They are also advised to minimize unnecessary travel at night to ensure their safety and that of first responders.
