WBA Backs Controversial Parker Win Amid Kauyaca’s Protests

The recent split points decision awarding New Zealand boxer John Parker the WBA Oceania cruiserweight title has received backing from the World Boxing Association. Two weeks ago in Hamilton, Parker faced Fijian fighter Alivereti Kauyaca, resulting in a victory for Parker.

However, Kauyaca’s manager and trainer, Farmaan Ali, has protested the outcome, seeking a reversal of the decision or a declaration of “no contest,” claiming that two judges made errors in their scoring. Ferlin Marsh, president of WBA Oceania, responded by having three international boxing judges review the fight footage and provide their assessments.

Marsh stated that after consulting with these judges and evaluating the fight himself, they all scored in favor of Parker, who was confirmed as the WBA Oceania Cruiserweight title holder. The scores from Australian judges were 96-94, 97-93, and 98-92, all in favor of Parker.

Marsh expressed his confidence in the independent judges, citing his longstanding professional relationship with them and their expertise in significant title bouts across various boxing organizations. He described the fight as complex to judge, noting that neither boxer managed to assert clear dominance, although Parker won slightly more rounds.

Despite Kauyaca appearing more active, judge Vocale pointed out that Kauyaca often missed scoring opportunities due to inaccuracies in his punches. Vocale remarked that many of Kauyaca’s strikes were poorly aimed or landed on the opponent’s gloves and arms.

While Parker may not have outlanded Kauyaca, he was significantly more effective with his strikes when they did connect. Judge Vocale acknowledged that the close nature of the fight could have led to different interpretations of the scoring.

Interestingly, Vocale’s wife, who has experience as an accredited judge, scored the bout a draw.

In response, Ali announced plans to consult additional boxing judges from the US and Europe, expressing discontent with the official ruling. He contested Vocale’s evaluation regarding scoring kidney strikes and alleged that Parker’s team intentionally adjusted his groin guard to protect against those punches.

Ali criticized the judges’ understanding of the fight, asserting his dissatisfaction with the decision and indicating that he would seek external opinions before accepting the outcome.
