Residents of Tacirua Heights are expressing frustration over ongoing water supply interruptions that have persisted for years. Vueti Maraiwai, a local resident and owner of Maraiwai Stores, emphasized that the erratic water supply has significantly impacted daily living, making it feel almost routine.
“The lack of consistent water has impacted our hygiene and cleanliness, especially since we need water for food preparation,” stated Mr. Maraiwai. He noted that when water shortages extend for prolonged periods, he has no choice but to send his three employees home due to the lack of supplies in his store.
He added that while water tanks provide temporary relief, they are insufficient during extended water outages. Peni Shute, a communications officer for the Water Authority of Fiji, acknowledged the ongoing efforts to enhance water supply to elevated areas like Tacirua Heights.
He advised residents to store water in tanks and explained that the location’s elevation means they receive a steady supply only when the reservoir levels are high. “When the water levels drop, they experience the first signs of water shortages, which is why we encourage residents to invest in water tanks and rely on water trucks for delivery,” Mr. Shute said, indicating that the situation may persist until the Viria system is connected to improve supply.
