Water Woes: Fiji’s Upper Khalsa Faces Long Road to Recovery

The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) officials have announced that they are in the process of gradually restoring water supply to the upper Khalsa areas in Nasinu, where residents have been experiencing water outages for over a week.

Peni Shute, acting manager of communications and stakeholder engagement, explained that it typically takes several days to restore supply to elevated locations. He noted the need to replenish reservoir levels, which have been further diminished as residents fill their household tanks once the water supply is reinstated.

WAF is currently providing water delivery services to the affected areas. Shute mentioned that a project is underway to enhance treated water levels from the Viria Water Supply System into the existing network for the Greater Suva Area (GSA), specifically in the higher regions of Tamavua and along Princes Road.

The water shortages reportedly began earlier last week due to heavy rainfall and a malfunction in one of the clarifier gearboxes at the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant. The ongoing heavy rains have further complicated treatment and production due to increased turbidity.

Additionally, Shute confirmed that planned maintenance at the Nayagi Reservoir led to temporary water supply disruptions at Navua Hospital, with services being affected from Wednesday at 5 PM until Thursday at 7 AM.
