Water Crisis Alert: Fiji’s Levuka Faces Dry Spell Challenges

The Water Authority of Fiji has reported a decline in raw water flows from its Levuka Water System, which draws from three primary sources: Totogo, Levuka Vaka-Viti, and Waitovu. This decrease is attributed to below-average rainfall in the dam’s catchment area and the ongoing dry weather affecting the region.

As a result of the diminished raw water supply, the Authority’s ability to treat and distribute water has been impacted, leading to reduced water availability for customers in the Levuka area. The WAF Hydrology team is closely monitoring the situation.

To temporarily address the issue and enhance water production, WAF will implement valve operations to regulate the supply to customers served by the Levuka system. These operations will take place daily in the early mornings and afternoons.

By managing the water flow in this manner, WAF aims to restore adequate water levels in the dam during off-peak nighttime hours, ensuring that there is enough storage to meet peak demand and provide all customers with a fair share of water. The Water Authority has urged customers to use water sparingly and suggested they consider investing in storage containers or tanks connected to the water system for additional supply.
