Since 2022, the Water Authority of Fiji has seen the resignation of over 100 employees, resulting in significant skill and competency shortages within its workforce. This issue was brought to light at WAF’s “Annual Customer Forum” held in Suva this morning.
Seru Soderberg, WAF’s Chief Operating Officer, reported that the departures include 65 individuals in critical fields such as electrical or mechanical trades, technical roles, laboratory positions, GIS, surveying, land valuation, and finance. He noted that many of these skilled workers are leaving for opportunities in Australia and New Zealand.
Seymour Singh, Chief Strategy and Information Officer, emphasized that this loss of personnel poses a direct challenge for the water sector that needs to be urgently addressed. He pointed out that staff are not only being attracted to overseas positions but also to other sectors within Fiji.
The Annual Customer Forum aims to provide updates on WAF’s projects and developments, discuss pressing issues, and gather feedback on service delivery. It also seeks to raise awareness about water conservation, waste management, and the services provided by WAF, aiming to foster positive changes in societal attitudes and behaviors.
