The vibrant streets of Labasa Town were filled with excitement as the Washington Tin Band performed recently, marking a significant festive occasion for the community following the cancellation of the New Year’s street party in the Northern Division. Hailing from Lami Village in Suva, this 13-member band captivated audiences with lively music crafted from empty drums, tins, sticks, and containers, entertaining passersby outside Dutt’s Shoe World and Chinatown Shops.

Band leader Mosese Ravadra expressed that their entertainment tour, which kicked off earlier in the week in Bua, aims to wish everyone a happy New Year through music. “We’re spending a few days in Labasa visiting villages before heading to Savusavu and Taveuni by the end of the week,” he noted. This marks the second consecutive year the band has journeyed from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu to spread joy during the New Year festivities.

During their engaging performances, the band invites audience contributions by placing a collection tin among the musicians. Ravadra explained that the proceeds will support the band members, particularly students, with back-to-school expenses. “There’s no fixed amount; whatever the generous people of the friendly North bless us with will be used for our children, who have dedicated their time to perform during this tour,” he stated.

In addition to the lively Labasa performances, another group of younger band members is performing on the streets of Suva, ensuring that the spirit of the New Year is felt far and wide. “Our goal is to include everyone in this celebration and bring joy wherever we go,” Ravadra emphasized.

The Washington Tin Band’s initiative beautifully merges entertainment with community support, providing a meaningful way to kick off the year for families across the North and beyond. This effort not only reinvigorates the festive spirit but also strengthens community ties, highlighting music’s essential role in nurturing joy and unity. As the new year unfolds, the Washington Tin Band stands as a beacon of positivity, showcasing how shared experiences and collective support can uplift and inspire communities.

In summary, their performances serve not only to entertain but also to reinforce community connections while addressing educational expenses, truly embodying a spirit of hope and collective joy as the year commences.
