The streets of Labasa Town were vibrant and full of life yesterday as the Washington Tin Band delivered an exhilarating performance, marking a joyous occasion following the cancellation of the 2024 New Year’s street festivities in the Northern Division. Hailing from Lami Village in Suva, this 13-member band captivated audiences with their energetic music, skillfully created using empty drums, tins, sticks, and various containers, as they performed outside Dutt’s Shoe World and Chinatown Shops.

Band leader Mosese Ravadra shared insights about their entertainment tour, which commenced earlier in the week in Bua. “We’re spending a few days in Labasa visiting villages before heading to Savusavu and Taveuni by week’s end,” Mr. Ravadra expressed, highlighting their mission to spread New Year cheer through music. This marks the second consecutive year that the band has journeyed from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu to share joy in the New Year celebrations.

During their lively performances, the band encourages audience members to contribute by placing a tin among the musicians. Ravadra explained that the funds collected are aimed at supporting the band members, particularly students, with back-to-school expenses. “There’s no fixed amount; whatever the generous people of the friendly North bless us with will be used for our children, who have dedicated their time to perform during this tour,” he noted with gratitude.

In addition to the festivities in Labasa, Ravadra mentioned that a group of younger band members is also performing on the streets of Suva, ensuring that the spirit of New Year is felt far and wide. “Our goal is to include everyone in this celebration and bring joy wherever we go,” he emphasized.

The Washington Tin Band’s initiative combines entertainment with community support, creating a meaningful way to kick off the year for families across the North and beyond. Their efforts not only enhance the festive spirit but also strengthen community ties, showcasing the vital role that music plays in nurturing joy and unity.

As the new year unfolds, the Washington Tin Band serves as a beacon of positivity, illustrating how collective support and shared experiences can uplift communities. This heartwarming initiative not only revitalizes local culture but also emphasizes the importance of education and community welfare, making for a hopeful start to the year.
