The Suva Magistrate’s Court has issued a bench warrant for Isikeli Komaisavai, the former vice-president of the Nasinu constituency for the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), after he did not attend his scheduled hearing on Thursday. Komaisavai, 52, faces charges of causing harm through electronic communication due to comments he allegedly made on Facebook on February 10, 2021, where he called for the death of then Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and made references to his own death.

During the proceedings, police prosecutor Sharmila Lata informed Magistrate Jeremaia Savou that all witnesses for the prosecution were present, while Komaisavai was absent. The court allowed the trial to proceed in his absence, and among the state’s witnesses was Sayed-Khaiyum himself, who is expected to testify against Komaisavai.

The court has scheduled the case to resume on December 17, when a judgment is anticipated.

This development underscores the seriousness with which the authorities are addressing threats made via social media and highlights the importance of accountability in political discourse. As the case progresses, it serves as a reminder of the need for respectful dialogue, particularly in politically charged environments.

In summary, the court’s actions reflect a commitment to upholding the law and ensuring that all individuals are held accountable for their actions, regardless of their position or affiliation. Hopefully, this case may encourage more responsible communication across social media platforms.
