A bench warrant has been issued by the Suva Magistrate’s Court for Isikeli Komaisavai, the former vice-president of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) in Nasinu, due to his failure to attend a scheduled hearing. Komaisavai, aged 52, is facing charges for allegedly causing harm through electronic communication. Specifically, it is claimed that on February 10, 2021, he made a Facebook post in which he threatened the life of the then Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
During the court session, prosecutor Sharmila Lata informed Magistrate Jeremaia Savou that all the prosecution’s witnesses were present, but Komaisavai was absent. The court permitted the trial to proceed without his presence. Notably, Mr. Sayed-Khaiyum himself was among the witnesses scheduled to testify.
The proceedings have been adjourned to December 17, at which time a judgment will be announced.
This case highlights the significance of responsible communication on social media and the consequences that may arise from threatening behavior online. As the judicial process continues, it serves as a reminder of the legal frameworks in place to protect individuals from harm and uphold public safety.
