The Suva Magistrate’s Court has issued a bench warrant for Isikeli Komaisavai, the former vice-president of the Nasinu constituency for the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), due to his absence at a scheduled hearing on Thursday. Komaisavai, who is 52 years old, faces a charge related to causing harm through electronic communication.

The allegations stem from an incident on February 10, 2021, when Komaisavai reportedly made a threatening comment on Facebook directed at the then Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, suggesting violence against him. During the court proceedings, prosecutor Sharmila Lata informed Magistrate Jeremaia Savou that while all witnesses were present, Komaisavai failed to appear. Following this, the prosecution requested to proceed with the trial in his absence, which the court approved. Notably, Sayed-Khaiyum himself was among the witnesses called to testify.

The matter has been postponed, with a new date set for December 17, when the court will deliver its judgment on the case.

This case underscores the serious implications of online communications and the legal responsibilities that come with them. It serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining respectful dialogue in public forums, especially in a politically charged environment.

Looking ahead, the judicial process will ensure that justice is served, reflecting society’s commitment to addressing threats and promoting peaceful discourse. As the legal proceedings progress, it is hoped that this situation will encourage individuals to use social media responsibly and to foster constructive conversations around political issues.
