The Suva Magistrate’s Court has issued a bench warrant for Isikeli Komaisavai, a former vice-president of the Nasinu constituency for the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA), following his failure to attend a scheduled hearing. Komaisavai, 52, is facing serious charges related to harm caused by his electronic communications. Specifically, it is alleged that he made threatening comments on Facebook regarding the former Attorney-General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, in February 2021.
During the court proceedings, prosecutor Sharmila Lata informed Magistrate Jeremaia Savou that all witnesses were present except for Komaisavai. The court agreed to proceed with the trial in his absence. Notably, Mr. Sayed-Khaiyum was among the witnesses summoned to testify against Komaisavai in this case.
The hearing has been adjourned until December 17, when a judgment is expected to be issued.
This situation underscores the importance of accountability in communication, particularly in the digital age. As such cases unfold, it serves as a reminder of the legal implications of our words and the platforms we use to express them. Looking forward, the judicial process will hopefully allow for a fair examination of the facts, and it could serve as a deterrent for others who may consider making harmful statements online.
