Warning Over Dangerous Dental Practices in Fiji

Spread the love

The Consumer Council of Fiji is sounding the alarm regarding unsafe and unregulated dental procedures being performed by individuals lacking proper training. This raises serious concerns about public health risks linked to these practices.

Seema Shandil, the CEO of the Council, noted that although no formal complaints have been received, investigations revealed that some traders are offering dental jewelry services for as little as $5. These informal procedures are often conducted at market stalls, introducing significant health and safety threats.

Mrs. Shandil cautioned about the types of materials and adhesives used in these dental practices, indicating that they may pose risks to one’s health. She emphasized that such unregulated and unsanitary methods could expose consumers to severe dangers, including infectious diseases and long-term health complications.

She strongly advises against participating in these questionable procedures, highlighting the risk of life-threatening outcomes. Consumers concerned about any experiences or issues are encouraged to contact the National Consumer Helpline at 155. Any complaints received will be taken seriously and forwarded to the Fiji Medical and Dental Council for investigation and necessary action.

Mrs. Shandil also directed a stern warning to traders involved in these unsafe practices, urging them to cease their operations immediately for the sake of public health.

The Consumer Council remains dedicated to protecting consumer rights while prioritizing the well-being and safety of the community through rigorous monitoring and enforcement measures.

In summary, the Council’s proactive stance is vital in addressing this alarming trend, encouraging consumers to make informed choices and report unsafe practices. This commitment not only safeguards public health but also reinforces the importance of regulated services in ensuring safety and professionalism in dental care.
